Welcome to the New Look Cliffhanger
Cliffhanger is an annual week long off road event involving winching up rocks and through mud, speedy creek runs, navigational tasks, rally stages on farm trails and is famous for its vertical winch walls. The stages are are all long lasting and typically combine several facets of winching, navigation and speed.
Our rocks are huge, our navigation stages have waypoints 20klm apart, our vertical winch walls are 20 feet tall and we have creek runs up to 100klm long.
We have entry level Touring Class - stages set with an attempt to avoid vehicle damage and safety aspects
Typically every day will have 1 speed stage, 1 winch stage, 1 navigation stage and then a stage that has a bit of everything. Competitors are known to quote "Now that was a Cliffhanger Stage".

BASE CAMP - Cliffhanger is a Family Friendly base camp, week long event where competitors, pit crew, friends, family and marshals all camp together in a social and friendly atmosphere.
Speaking of Base Camp we have a new location still on the Mt Gap Rd but just before you get to the homestead. You would have past it going to the 2016 event so you wont miss it in 2017. It's flat with water and trees and a hint of mobile phone range for those with NextG phone antennas. Call me if you need to get yourself set up with remote area phone and internet access.
RAIN - At our 2016 event we had over 150mm of rain in the opening days of the event. The rivers not only flowed but flooded yet we still managed to pull off 20 exciting stages. Geared with that bit of hindsight knowledge we can move forward and plan for even better preparation and handling. Base Camp has been relocated so it's not on the "other side" of the creek and we now know the stages at the top of the hills don't necessarily mean we wont get trucks bogged on high ground. And we know that stages get harder in the wet and so we shall factor that into stage preparation.
But in a worst case situation of seriously wet and impossible terrain we have a plan B which is to reset the date of the event back a few months to July School Holidays in Vic and Qld. There is always 1 week of overlap - it will be that week. But that's just a Plan B.
GROUPS - This year we will trial being in set groups of 10 vehicles for the entire week.
CLASSES - We shall have 3 Groups of Winch Trucks (Challenge Class) and as well as 2 Groups of Middle Class (More affordable budget controls) and 2 Groups for entry level Touring Class.
CCDA (Cross Country Driver's Association) - Given people are building vehicles right now for racing in 2017 we decided there was not enough time to mull over and discuss class specs in a large group. It's a topic that attracts a lot of passionate input geared around what people have already done to their car rather than what would be good for the sport. So we pushed our class specs through and flying with what we have. Also CCDA need time to become better integrated with the others states such as having more vehicle scrutineers throughout NSW, QLD and SA. And so for 2017 we shall again be without a formal CCDA affiliation. We have our own public liability insurance cover and adopt very similar if not the same safety regulations. In fact we have more new safety standards for 2017. We are pleased to announce we have CCDA committee members attending as VIP guests to see how we roll and see how the classes are working out and our intention is to strive towards a 2018 affiliation and a joining of forces. CCDA does have some very switched on people in their committee and it will be great outcome eventually.
GPS TRACKING - We will be using Rallysafe. Costs not yet determined but might be a small daily fee. We can find lost or stranded vehicles but we can also see who is going the wrong way, taking a short cut or speeding (Touring Class). There are also safety features like distress communications and warnings of approaching vehicles (New Feature).
THE FOLLOWING YEAR - 2018 - We have already set the dates for 2018. That being April 8th to 13th 2018 - It's the second week after Easter and is school holidays for both Vic and Qld
We are taking entries for 2018 here online and already have some! They will benefit from really low weekly payments and wont even feel it at all.
WRONG WAY GO BACK - in rally stages we often use arrows at gates and intersections to guide you. On the back of those signs we will now have signage clearly saying "WRONG WAY - GO BACK !" If you choose to ignore these signs you are clearly going the wrong way and place yourself and others at risk of collision. A practice we can not endorse and so we have a new rule that says teams will be disqualified if the GPS tracker shows us they have been going against the signs. Not only are we making the track easier to follow but making it a lot safer too.
